The Namibian rugby team proved that they are ready for a steep battle when they go the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
The ‘Boytjies’ took on the Vodacom Bulls at the WHS Vegkop Stadium in Windhoek. And what was supposed to be squash match turned out to be one of the best performances by the Namibian side. The Welwitschias might have lost the match 43-30, but they inspired the nation.
The Welwitschias held their composure and constantly fought back against the away team. The game was off to a strong start with the Bulls attacking from the get-go and they got the opening try. The ‘Boytjies’ didn’t let that bring them down and a few minutes later they secured their first try as well.
After an entertaining first half the Vodacom Bulls led the game 19-13. The second half was also off to a fiery start with both teams going over the try lines. Coach Jake White of the Bulls made his way to the outfield to motivate his team, after the Welwitschias came close to taking the lead.
Several substitutions were made by both teams and it proved critical to the Bulls victory. The crowd roared loudly as they ‘Backed the Boytjies’, but unfortunately the Bulls got a last minute try to seal the win.
After the game the spectators flooded the field to chat with their favourite players and coaches. Everyone got to take a picture and had a chance to get some autographs. The spirit at a national rugby game is always high, because Namibia is a rugby nation.
Before the gates opened the people lined up outside the stadium, because no one wanted to miss seeing the boys on a Namibian field one last time before they head off. It was a special day and the organisers, the team and the Namibian nation made it spectacular.
