So my first chapter starts now. New city, new country and with a new hope that I can finally achieve my dreams.
I decided to journal my new journey with a new chapter coming out each week. Each of these chapters will obviously reference a movie, TV show, video game or anything pop culture. I think this weeks title is fitting for where this story is going.
I have a new found hope in my future. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a little skeptical because I’m so used to things going wrong as soon as it seems there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Kind of like what the Rebellion went through in Star Wars, they could’ve never thought a second Death Star would be build.
Anyway, I have hope because I’m finally doing something I’ve been wanting to do for the last 2 decades, write. I remember writing my first story on this old PC my dad brought home. It was about two best friends getting stuck in what they thought was a haunted house, but it turned out to be an old man trying to torture them.
It’s kind of a messed up story for a 9-year-old to write, but this was during the peak of early 2000s horror and I grew up on 80s horror movies. It was at that moment that I realised that I could use my written words to say the things my mouth struggled to say.
I wanted to be writer because there’s no better way to express myself and to say something without verbal boundaries. Writing is my escape, it’s my happy place, it’s my fortress of solitude and the place I go when I need to rediscover things about myself and about life.
Fast-forward almost 10 years after that first story – my first full poem. I was trying to write a song, but it evolved into something different (I wish I was musical, but I’m not) and that opened my eyes to a different art. It was a different escape, something more raw and honest.
My poems are the parts of me I don’t know how express, except through words. And then came my career in journalism, I was in a place where I wrote other people’s stories. It wasn’t always what I wanted to write, but it was a school of learning.
And long before all the writing came the movies. Film is an art form that embodies all of my character and personality. I’m not a good orator, but I can talk about movies nonstop. The Movie Guy feels like my greatest achievement ever.
And The Movie Guy brought me to Cape Town. I still don’t have a clear view of my future, but I have a new hope. I have hope that when I start pouring my everything into doing this thing that I can become successful. The Movie Guy is a beacon of hope and dreams, a place where I can share my passion and hopefully inspire others and entertain the rest.
