Lukas review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Local cinema has really grown over the last decade. It makes me proud to see the Namibian film industry reach its full potential.

Lukas is a must-see movie for everyone. It’s a real Namibian story seen through the eyes of our own people. It’s a film that makes you experience the hardships and struggles of the people on the street. We easily ignore their struggles, but this film gives us insight of what they go through to survive.

Lukas is the first Namibian film to be in South African and Namibian cinemas. And I think it’s the perfect film to showcase Namibian stories to the South African audiences. See below at which cinemas you can book you tickets.

The film really is unique in that it puts you in the shoes of the titular character, Lukas. You get to be part of his heartbreaks and triumphs. The character of Lukas is excellently portrayed by three talented Namibian actors, Alejandro Cooper, Hernandes Gaonatgosi and Treazurique Titus. The film is also carried by a wonderful ensemble of supporting actors and actresses.

One of the main things I took from this movie is the impact people can have on your life. Lukas’ primary school teacher, wonderfully portrayed by Felicity Celento, is his biggest support during his hard times at home. He carries her love and support with him throughout his life.

Another huge plus is the setting. You get to see different sides of Windhoek and Namibia. The awesome thing about local movies is they are all shot on location. No sets built in some studio, you are actually emerged into the universe the film takes place in.

The writing is also great and it makes the characters more grounded and relatable. Director Philippe Talavera does an amazing job in telling the story of Lukas in a way that keeps it interesting. He also knows how to build suspense.

I love that the film follows a Nonlinear narrative, I believe this adds to the intrigue of the story. Now I have to be honest in all my reviews, because that’s what the audience expects of me. The movie really is great, amazing even, but it’s not perfect. My biggest critique is the sound editing, at times it was hard to hear some characters, but this might just be the cinemas speakers.

Apart from that, Lukas is film that needs the audience’s support. The more tickets you buy, the higher the chance we’ll get more local stories in theaters across the continent and beyond. So support Lukas and support the awesome cast and crew.
