I used to think Inside Out didn’t need a sequel, but I think Inside Out 2 might have changed my mind.
The last few Pixar movies have been underwhelming, so I was skeptical when they announced a sequel to Inside Out. The film was already the best original idea to come from the studio in years and it didn’t need to be expanded on, but after watching Inside Out 2 I see it differently now.
Come to think of it, the first movie did leave things open to continue the story. The second film is actually amazing, not as great as the first but I do think it makes a good case for existing. And you know it’s hard to follow up something perfect.
Inside Out 2 really surprised me, but since I was ready to write a bad review, here’s are all the negatives about the movie: it’s a little too short; there are few writing and creative choices that I don’t agree with and… And that’s it. I actually really loved the movie.
The new characters perfectly complements the returning characters. The movie wonderfully portrays every humans emotional progression from wide-eyed child to anxious-struck teenager. Anxiety the character is also a great representation of the emotion itself.
The filmmakers beautifully illustrates the hard-hitting reality of suppressing emotions and the sense of self. One scene in this film particularly really stood out to me and it was the scene where Riley has a panic attack, I never related to a movie scene more than at that moment. (I talk more about it in my review video)
The voice acting is once-again fantastic. The film stars Amy Poehler as Joy, and Phyllis Smith as Sadness. Their characters are once again the heart of the story. Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan also reprising their roles from the first film.
Tony Hale replaces Bill Hader as Fear, and Liza Lapira replaces Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Maya Hawke stars as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri stars as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos is Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser is Embarassment, and Kensington Tallman replaces Kaitlyn Dias as Riley.
Maya Hawke really shines as anxiety. Come to think of it, my anxiety shot up a little every time the character appeared on screen and that’s a good thing. The film also brings in other new characters that will have you laughing your butt off.
Inside Out is also visually stunning. We are once again going on a trip through Riley’s head and this time we get see a few new places. The animation for two new characters, Lance Slashblade and Bloofy is also a breath of fresh air, but I won’t spoil it for you.
The film really is ideal for family or just anyone who loves a good animated film. I was really excited, but still skeptical and I came out with a new attitude. This movie has a special place in my heart now and I can’t wait for everyone else to go see it.
