The year is halfway done and so far I’ve mostly enjoyed going to the cinema.
The 2024 box office seemed liked it might be a total letdown, but a handful of movies rolled around and saved us from disaster. This year (so far) had a bunch of awesome films in cinemas and even on streaming. It took me a while to nail down my top 10, but here they are.
10. Música

Rudy Mancuso is weird and this film is weird, but that’s what makes it awesome. It’s a musical that isn’t a musical. It isn’t your typical rom-com, yet it feels like it. It’s a unique film that really parallels some stories from my own life. I was laughing, crying and sometimes both at once. This is the kind of film we need, something odd but relatable.
9. Ordinary Angels

This is the film that broke my heart. Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson really pulled at the heartstrings with this one. Simply put this is a movie about miracles. All the little things we do can change someone’s life for the better. This is a movie that everyone needs to watch, it restored my faith in humanity and it reminded how God can work through everyone.
8. Unsung Hero

A movie I didn’t know existed until I watched it. For KING AND COUNTRY is one of my favourite groups and this is sort of their biography: A movie about unsung heroes. Now that I’m older I can see the sacrifices my parents made for my siblings and I. This movie is for all fathers and mothers who think they are under appreciated, you are loved and valued. You are the unsung heroes.
7. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

I thought we were done with this franchise, but then they came back with this banger. Different characters, but same planet of the apes. The world has changed since the apes became the dominant species. This film is visually stunning and it has greats villains. I can’t wait to see more of the apes, I need more apes.
6. Civil War

This film might not be what people expected, but it is what we needed. Not all divides are political, sometimes we withdraw ourselves from others because we refuse to listen. This movie depicts the effects and horrors of war journalism. It’s not about sending a political mission but rather an emotional one. It’s a great thriller that will haunt me forever.
5. Society of the Snow

This is a story that we’ve seen before and it is known worldwide, but this film beautifully depicts it. I feel like it gives us a beautiful look at the crash and aftermath of flight 571 in the Andes. The film looks beautiful, the story caries a strong emotional gut punch and the acting is just brilliant. This movie deserves a lot more recognition.
4. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

I wished more people showed up for this! It is one of the best action flicks in quite a while. It felt original and fresh, while at the same time it felt familiar but in a good way. George Miller has a unique way to tell stories. This will also be known as one of Chris Hemsworth’s best roles ever and Anya Taylor-Joy is a gem that needs to be cherished.
3. Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal

I haven’t followed wrestling as much over the last few years, but Bray Wyatt has always been an interesting character to me. Windham Rotunda was a creative inventor to me. This documentary was unlike anything I’ve watched. It not only served as a beautiful sent-off for Windham and Bray Wyatt, but it also inspired something in me. It made me want to explore my creative side again, because every story deserves to be told. Rest in Peace Windham.
2. Inside Out 2

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Inside Out, I believe it is the best Pixar movie and I will fight people for it. So obviously I was excited for this film, but I had to keep myself in check, but sequels often suck. I was pleasantly surprised by how wonderfully made this movie is. Just like the first movie it felt like it was speaking directly to me. It might not be as perfect as its predecessor, but it’s still a film close to my heart.
1. Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two is probably one of the best book to film adaptations I’ve ever seen and I wasn’t even such a big fan of the first film. This one really took me by surprise. I had high expectations and it totally crushed it. The film easily became one of my all-time favourites. It is near perfect from a technical and story standpoint. Denis, his crew and cast didn’t come to play and I’m glad I was there for it.
