Beetlejuice… Beetlejuice… Beetle… You thought I’d say it third time, but believe I’m not ready for that kind of crazy.
I definitely don’t want some ghost walk around in my house, but I’m all in for all the crazy in the movie. Tim Burton, the Danny Elfman score and Michael Keaton, legendary. When you get this trio together you know something iconic is about to go down.
This movie does exactly what you’d expect and if you don’t know the first one then this one will definitely shock you. It’s over-the-top weird and I love that. Burton once again let his imagination run wild and I’m glad I’m here for it. You can see the director is passionate about this movie.
The performances by Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega are brilliant. They work so well together and O’Hara had me cracking up more than once. Ortega is ready to carry on the legacy, and I can’t wait to see more of her character.
Willem Dafoe is hilarious and so good in his role. They really had him running around doing all kinds of odd stuff. Monica Bellucci is amazing as always. And Michael Keaton hits it out of the park with his performance. It’s like Beetlejuice never left.
The film pays homage to it’s predecessor, while introducing a few new elements to the universe. The claymation and other animation looks amazing. I’m a big fan of the practical effects and it specifically works for this film.
I enjoyed the story, but I agree with some critics that it feels a little over-stuffed. There’s a lot going, but at least it’s not hard to keep track. All-in-all, I had fun. The hair on the back of my neck even raised up in excitement. This movie is worth the watch.
