The moment we’ve been waiting for is finally here, the lawyers are back and this time we might go to court.
Oliver Queen is Harvey Specter… Sorry, I mean Stephen Amell is Ted Black, a cocky lawyer who will stop at nothing to get the win. Even if it means crossing into some morally or legally grey areas. Suits: LA has the flare and flavour of its predecessor, but yet it feels different.
It might be the different setting, or the different focus of the show, or maybe the show is just different from Suits – It doesn’t really matter, because I’m hooked to it. I watched the first three episodes and trust me, you don’t know what’s to come.
Suits LA takes place in Los Angeles, which is obvious since it’s in the title. And this time there’s a focus on entertainment law and not so much corporate law, which makes sense because of the setting.
And we follow Ted Black, played by Stephen Amell, a former federal prosecutor from New York, turned entertainment lawyer for the Hollywood elite. Ted’s dark past sent him on this path and that’s where we meet him as well as the other lawyers at his firm including… Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane; Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins; Bryan Greenberg as Rick Dodsen and Alice Lee as Leah.
So the good news is, Harvey Specter is also back! That’s right, Gabriel Macht will have a recurring role and who knows, maybe the rest of his Suits family will join him. Suits LA, is great… but it does miss the key ingredient that made the original show so good, Mike and Harvey’s relationship.
The story is good from the get-go, but it does feel a little lacking. Some characters feel familiar, because they are copies from the original show. The lawyers aren’t as cut-throat this time, but maybe that will change.
I don’t want to judge a show on it’s title sequence or the first three episodes. I do think Suits LA has potential, a lot of potential. Stephen Amell is a likable lead and getting to know the supporting cast will definitely be a major plus. Another good thing the show has going for it, is all the potential celebrity guest stars, it is in Hollywood after all.
So while Suits definitely casts a huge shadow over Suits LA, the newer show does have some legs to stand on – I think it just needs some time. If you were a fan of the original, then you’re going to like this. If you love a little law drama, then you’ll get a kick out of this. I personally can’t wait to continue watching Suits LA. It drops on Showmax on 24 February.
