Fans have been waiting a long time for this movie, I don’t know which fans but apparently they’ve been waiting.
A Minecraft Movie is one of those “what you see is what you get” films. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it has a goofy tone and it will not be a Best Picture winner at next year’s Oscars. It’s apparently a movie for the fans, I just don’t know if the fans really asked for it.
If you don’t know, Minecraft is a sandbox game that came out back in 2009, so it has spanned over multiple generations by now. The game allows you to mine different minerals and then craft whatever you like. It’s basically a way to explore your creativity, something the writers of this movie didn’t do.
So while most of the movie takes place in the world of Minecraft or Overworld, they don’t explore the concept of Minecraft enough. They do just enough to make it seem like you’re in a live action version of the game. I wish we got to see more building and crazy inventions.
The movie stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge and Sebastian Hansen. Jack Black stars as Jack Black who is apparently a guy called Steve and Jason Momoa just plays a less cool version of himself. While Sebastian Hansen stars as Henry, a kid who gets bullied in school and eventually dominates the world of Minecraft.
The movie’s plot is kind of familiar, because it pulls a lot from Jumunji and the Super Mario Bros. Movie. It doesn’t give you anything new when it comes to videogame adaptations, in fact it kind of feels like it’s destroying the reputation the good adaptations built. Now it’s nowhere as bad Doom or Borderlands.
A Minecraft Movie is entertaining enough to get a few giggles out of you. Now if you’re a 10-year-old who loves watching other people play Minecraft on Twitch or YouTube, then you will love this movie. It has a lot of references that will blow the mind of a Gen Alpha. And it has some jokes that a millennial or Gen Z might appreciate.
While this movie is nowhere near perfect, it is watchable and I think it might be box office hit. I can only recommend it to people who already likes Minecraft or who has nothing else to do. Maybe you just want to take the kids out for a bit, they’ll probably love it. Will I watch it again? Probably, but only because my nephew might insist on watching it.
