It is official, Emperor Palpatine is alive and he’s making his way to Comic Con Cape Town with a fleet of Star Destroyers.
The good news is, he has no Death Star this time. Comic Con Cape Town officially announced that Star Wars icon Ian McDiarmid will be gracing the 2025 edition of the festival. And he will be part of the International Star Wars Day, May the Fourth. Hopefully he won’t be around for Revenge of Fifth.
McDiarmid is best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Emperor Palpatine — and his dark alter ego Darth Sidious — in both the all three trilogies of the Star Wars saga, McDiarmid’s appearance is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s convention.
Fans will have the unique opportunity to engage with McDiarmid through autograph sessions, photo ops, and live Q&A panels on the Main Stage. This rare chance to connect with one of the saga’s most iconic villains promises to deliver exclusive insights into the world of Star Wars and the evolution of one of cinema’s greatest antagonists. It’s a moment many South African fans have been waiting for — a meeting with a true legend of the galaxy far, far away.
“Star Wars has shaped modern pop culture in countless ways,” said Carla Massmann, Show Director of the festival. “From iconic phrases like ‘May the force be with you’ to revolutionizing film through groundbreaking visual effects, the franchise has left an indelible mark.” She emphasized how the saga helped elevate sci-fi into blockbuster territory, pioneering the use of computer-generated imagery in cinema.
To celebrate this galactic occasion, Comic Con Cape Town is planning a host of themed activities, including cosplay competitions, trivia games, and a range of Star Wars collectibles available from vendors. Rene Staack, Content and Talent Director, expressed the team’s excitement: “It’s an honour to welcome Ian McDiarmid to South Africa. We’re inviting fans of all ages to come and celebrate May the Fourth in a way that unites generations under the banner of the Star Wars universe.”
