MI8 is exactly what you’d expect from this franchise, it completely crazy. I don’t know how Tom Cruise still pulls off all the stunts, and quite frankly I’m stunned. Now is this the best film in the franchise? Definitely not. Is it awesome anyway? Absolutely.

Let’s start with what I loved about the movie, Tom Cruise! Cruise delivers a gripping dramatic performance that’s only improved by the amazing stunts. I mean he was dangling off a small plane in the middle of South Africa. The stunt looks even more crazier on the big screen.

Apart from Tom, the other performances were exceptional as well. Haley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, and Ving Rhames reprise their roles from previous films and they all are awesome. The stand out for me was newcomer, Tramell Tillman who had more like a glorified cameo and yet he stole the scene every minute he was on screen.

The film also looks amazing, I already talked about some of it taking place in South Africa – which is cool because they also shot here in the good old RSA. They highlight the beautiful landscapes of this beautiful country. Mission: Impossible is known for it’s stunts, it’s an action thriller for goodness sake.

The film definitely doesn’t hold back on the action with amazing practical effects and great CGI. The fight choreography is also great with an amazing fight sequence early in the movie. I don’t have to tell you about the stunts again, we all know it gets crazy.

Now while this movie is fantastic, it’s not without faults. At times it also feels like more thriller than action. First off, it takes a while to get started. The first 30 minutes feel a little long and that’s not what you want from a movie that’s nearly 3 hours long. Secondly, the conclusion is satisfying, but I still feel like they could’ve done more.

I love the story and there are some awesome twists, surprising deaths and interesting characters. Unfortunately some of the newer characters don’t get to properly develop in the film and unfortunately some characters I hoped we’d see again, do not come back.

There’s a lot I can say about MI8, but all you really need to know is that the film is worth watching. It might not be the best in the franchise, but it’s still a fantastic movie that really proved Tom’s love for film. I can’t wait to watch it again, hopefully soon.
