Hello there
Here we are, halfway through 2025, and I’m just grateful that we made it this far. I’m grateful for you, and I’m grateful that I get to send out another newsletter. The first six months flew by a lot faster than I expected.
We got some awesome movies, great TV shows, and news that we have to wait a little longer for GTA 6. Through it all, I made new friends, tried changing up my content, and I managed to watch 200 movies and a few TV shows.
This newsletter is simply to update everyone on what happened over the last six months and to talk about the coming months. Right now, I try to send out a newsletter every quarter, but please let me know if you’d like to receive a monthly newsletter. Let’s get this newsletter started.
What I’ve Been Up To
YouTube Channel Growth: I’ve finally made it to 5,000 subscribers. Thanks to everyone who still supports my channel. I know I don’t post on it as much, but I have some exclusive content planned for YouTube. Hopefully I can keep the YouTube stuff separate from the other social media content.
My Novella Project: In case you didn’t know, I’ve been trying to get back to writing. I’ve been brainstorming some ideas, and I think I have something. I can’t say more than that yet, but I’ve been working on an outline. I have an ending, and the beginning is coming together.
Social Media Goals: When the year started, I set out to grow my Instagram and TikTok. I’m happy to report that I exceeded my TikTok target and am about halfway to achieving my Instagram target. Honestly, this is thanks to you all.
Comic Con: Comic Con Cape Town was awesome! I’ve talked about it before, and I will continue talking about it. At the beginning of the year I said I wanted to make new friends and the people of Cape Town have welcomed me with open arms. Now I just need someone to invite me for a braai or a boardgame night (fingers-crossed).
Republikein: You can find The Movie Guy in the Republikein (Namibia’s number one Afrikaans newspaper) every Friday. I have a dedicated column in the newspaper that you can read online, or if you are in Namibia, then I’d recommend you buy the paper. I use this space for reviews, short stories and just to talk about pretty much everything I love.
What’s To Come
More Giveaways: I like running giveaways. I don’t just get people to go to the cinema, but I also get to share the joy of movie magic with them. I have a few giveaways planned, including a Superman quiz and something special with The Fantastic Four. You can also look forward to more movie ticket giveaways thanks to my friends at CineCentre.
Future Events: The only way to catch me outside is to track me down to my nearest cinema, but I do go out for a few special occasions. Later this year, I will attend the Silwerskermfees (for all my Afrikaans-movie lovers). There’s also a chance that I will attend FAME Week Africa, fingers crossed. And then I obviously want to go to Comic Con Africa.
New Projects: I hosted my first Live Q&A, and I think it was okayish. I still have a lot to learn, but I’ll get there. I hope to do at least three more before the end of the year. I also really want to organize a fan or movie event in Cape Town, so if you’re keen, please let me know. If I get enough interest, then I will start working on something. Lastly, I want to start a podcast, but I can’t just talk to myself every week — so hopefully, I can find a few people to interview, maybe a film star or two.
Merch: I know I’ve been taking my time with this, but it’s hard to start selling stuff if the interest isn’t there. I’m also looking into local suppliers that can help me print affordable t-shirts, caps, and hoodies. I want to keep the prices low so anyone can get a design they like. If you are interested, send me an email and let me know.
Let’s Talk Movies and TV
I watched over 200 films since the year started and I’ve watched a few new TV shows and rewatched a few classics. I’m currently rewatching Superstore and honestly, I’m really excited for the South African adaptation. Anyway, here are my favourite movies and TV shows.
My 5 Favourite Movies of 2025 So Far
Sinners: This list is in no particular order, but if it was, then Sinners would’ve been number one. The way Ryan Coogler tells a story with music needs to be studied. This movie deserves all the praise it gets, and I hope they don’t ruin it with a sequel.
Thunderbolts*: This has to be one of the best MCU movies since GOTG Vol. 3 and Spider-Man: NWH. It’s not just entertaining, but it’s a film with heart and an amazing cast. Florence Pugh’s Yelena might be my favourite MCU hero now. I really love the Thunderbolts, I mean The New Avengers.
F1: The latest movie on this list, and it definitely deserves its spot. It’s an immersive experience that you can only understand if you go watch it yourself. I’m a Formula 1 fan for life now, and it’s all because of how thrilling this movie is. You have to go watch it.
Final Destination: Bloodlines: When this year started, I didn’t think I’d have a horror movie on this list, but this movie was brilliant. Final Destination is my favorite horror franchise, and it might just be the nostalgia talking, but I think this movie absolutely rocks!
Predator: Killer of Killers: The only streaming-exclusive movie on my list. I think I would’ve loved watching it in a movie theater. This film serves as a reminder of how great this franchise can be when they give us a great hunt. The animation also looks fantastic.

My 5 Favourite TV Shows
Deli Boys: A great comedy that I feel kind of flew under the radar. If you love a mafia comedy show, then you should definitely watch this on Disney+.
Paradise: A gripping political thriller that somehow becomes one of the best sci-fi shows I’ve watched in years. Honestly, I’d watch anything with Sterling K. Brown. This is also on Disney+.
The Studio: Seth Rogen gives us a look at what it’s like to run a studio in Hollywood. This Apple TV show is brilliantly funny and has some of the best celebrity cameos, even Martin Scorsese shows up.
Daredevil: Born Again: It might not be as good as the original Daredevil show, but it comes close enough. Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher is what every MCU fanboy/fangirl’s dreams are made of. It’s also on Disney+.
Murderbot: Another Apple TV show that adds a new spin to the sci-fi genre. Alexander Skarsgård plays a robot with a mind of his own, who’s supposed to protect a group of scientists.

My 5 Most Anticipated Movies for the Rest of 2025
I don’t have to convince anyone that I’m excited to go watch Superman, or The Fantastic Four, so I’m just going to skip over them and give you a different list. I already watched Jurassic World: Rebirth and it was awesome.
Happy Gilmore 2: I know Adam Sandler and Netflix don’t have a good quality record, but I’m still excited for this. The first movie was a classic, so here’s to hoping they don’t mess up its legacy.
Mortal Kombat II: Any 90s kid should be excited for this, and we’re getting Johnny Cage. The first movie was great, and I have faith that this one will be better. So here’s to Round 2!
Now You See Me, Now You Don’t: I believe this is the second-best heist franchise ever, and you can’t change my mind. I can’t wait to see what the horsemen come up with this time. I know it’s going to be magical.
Freakier Friday: I usually don’t like it when they make sequels to classics, but I’m hoping Disney can prove me wrong. We have the original cast returning, so this is one for my fellow millennials.
Wicked For Good: I don’t have to say much about this movie. Wicked was mind-blowing, and this will either be like that or even better.

A Quick Note on Support
Creating content, sharing stories, and keeping this journey going means a lot to me — but it also takes time, tools, and a bit of help along the way. If you’ve enjoyed my work so far this year — whether it’s a video, review, a giveaway, or just a fun post and if you’d like to support what I do, here are a few simple ways to help:
- Join my Patreon – Some of my eBook cookbooks, poetry bundles, and exclusive audio content are now available there.
- Buy Me A Coffee – Make a donation to buy me coffee or invest in my work and equipment.
- Share my work – A simple repost, share, come, like or mention helps more than you think.
- Send a message – Is there something you want to talk to me about? Why not send an email to themovieguy.nam@gmail.com.
I’m currently working toward upgrading my gear (especially my laptop and microphone) to create better content, faster—and every bit of support helps make that happen. Thanks for being part of this journey. The second half of 2025 is going to be even better.
That’s it from me for now, thank you for sticking with me through the first half of the year. Whether you read, watch, like, or share, your support means the world. Here’s to more great stories, better content, great movies and a strong finish to 2025.
Stay awesome,
– The Movie Guy
