Superman has always been a character that’s supposed to inspire hope, and I’m happy to say I feel hopeful after the newest movie.
It’s no secret that I’ve been hyping up my excitement for Superman. It was my most anticipated 2025 film and I still can’t stop talking about it. Now, did it meet all my expectations? Well, it definitely met most of them. That said, I still think it’s a fantastic film.
I’ll start with what I love about this movie. David Corenswet is now the definitive Superman. He not only embodies Kal-El, but also Clark Kent. We just don’t get to see enough of Clark as a Daily Planet journalist (minor spoiler). Now, I loved Henry Cavill as Superman, but he wasn’t given the right material.
Next, the story. David got the right material, the story made sense for the character. James Gunn tells a story that feels authentic to the character. Yes, there’s a lot going on, but I don’t think it gets convoluted. There’s enough screentime for the main and supporting cast.
The story really drives home the fact that Superman is a hero, not just some overpowered being. They show his humanity, and that’s what I love about the character and the film. Superman hasn’t always been my favourite character, but I sure do admire his morals and principles.
Back to the cast, Rachel Brosnahan is an awesome Lois Lane. I love her in the role. Nicholas Hoult is one of my favourite actors of all-time, and his Lex Luthor is legendary. Lex is just a petty, smart guy who envies Superman’s powers and I love it. But his motivations can come across as campy.
The supporting cast really steals the show. Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific steals every scene he’s in. I just love Isabela Merced. She’s a great Hawkgirl. I never thought I’d see the day Guy Gardner would be on the big screen, and I’m just glad Nathan Fillion does him justice. Skyler Gisondo is also the perfect Jimmy Olsen.
The film was really awesome. I loved the action scenes and some of the set pieces. There were some scenes that felt like they came straight out of a comic book panel. James Gunn knows how to make a scene pop. He also incorporated his style of humour into the film, and I think it works. It doesn’t come across as too much.
Now for the bad parts. The visuals sometimes feel unfinished. There’s one scene in particular that felt like it came out of The Flash movie. Certain shots feel like they are overused, especially when it comes to Superman flying. Other than that, I genuinely loved the film.
I’m just glad I got to watch a Superman movie that actually feels like a Superman movie or rather, it feels like a live-action episode of the Superman: The Animated Series. I can highly recommend this movie and I can’t wait to hear everyone’s take on it.
