I believe most movies don’t need a sequel or a reboot, but I’m definitely not mad about this Freaky Friday sequel.
The first thing Disney did right was bring back the original cast, and that’s probably the only reason most people will want to watch this movie. Is the movie bad? Not at all, but it definitely has its faults.
Freakier Friday is a lot of fun. I think some of the humour from the original film that they used doesn’t translate well for modern audiences. They also tried to add some modern humour to the movie and it feels a little forced.
Now back to the story, this one also has the emotional beats of the first one, although it’s a little different. It definitely carries the spirit of the franchise while also giving us something new, specifically new relationships to care about. Thankfully, I enjoyed the emotional parts of the movie.
Like I said, the jokes don’t always land, but when they do, they hit you hard. There were moments when I couldn’t stop laughing. They reused some of the comedic moments from the first film, and it was great to see them play out in modern times.
The cast definitely carries this movie. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan still know how to have fun, and that’s what makes their performances so great. Not only do they have great chemistry, but they also leave room for the new and younger cast to shine. Honestly, the best part of the movie for me is the performances.
The music is also awesome, very reminiscent of the early 2000s era. And if you loved the first movie, then I have some good news for you: Pink Slip returns! It took me right back to watching the first movie. It’s things like this that make this movie worth watching.
It’s not just about the funny or heartfelt moments, but also the nostalgia that’s wrapped around this movie. It might not be the greatest Disney sequel, but it’s one I’m glad I got to watch. In fact, I look forward to watching it again. It comes out 8 August.
