This is a movie made for the cinema, and waiting to watch it at home would be a big mistake.

I’m not saying this to convince you to buy movie tickets, but to get you to experience something phenomenal. Visually, it’s one of the best movies of the year, even if its story feels a little dull at times.

Let’s start with the cast. Jared Leto actually isn’t bad in it — I genuinely enjoyed his performance as Ares. Greta Lee, however, is fantastic, and she easily carries this movie. The supporting cast is wonderful as well, with Evan Peters delivering a great psychopath performance, something we’ve seen him do before.

Let’s get to the story. I do think this story is better than both previous films. It doesn’t quite carry the emotional weight of Tron: Legacy, but it perfectly reflects the AI and VI fears we have today. I think it asks — and answers — some of the questions we have when it comes to this kind of technology.

Unfortunately, it does feel dull and too familiar at times. Thankfully, the awesome Nine Inch Nails soundtrack and score make up for it. Their music is the star of the show and fits perfectly into the film’s world. I just want to say one thing about the marketing: they should’ve kept Jeff Bridges’ return a secret — it would’ve added to the weight of the story.

I obviously have to talk more about the visuals. The blending of the real world with The Grid is literally out of this world — it’s simply spectacular. The movie also pays homage to the first film in an awesome way. The action sequences are a lot of fun, and Jared Leto really does rock it as an AI soldier.

So while Tron: Ares might not have the story I was hoping for, it makes up for it with a great soundtrack and visuals that make me appreciate the cinema experience. I’d recommend this to all sci-fi fans, and I definitely suggest watching it in a movie theatre.
