Silent Night, Deadly Night – Review

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Silent Night, Deadly Night might be the best Christmas movie of the year.

Nothing could have prepared me for this movie and that’s what I love most about it. From the opening scene, it immediately sets a tone that feels both familiar and completely unhinged in the best way. It is funny, it is gory, and it fully embraces what it wants to be. It slowly eases you in and then it hits you like an axe on the head.

At its core, this is an amazing slasher movie. If you are a fan of slasher horrors, then you definitely have to go check this out. The kills are creative, brutal, and often darkly funny, which makes the experience even more entertaining. The film knows exactly how far to push things without losing its sense of fun, and that balance is what makes it work so well. It feels like a love letter to classic slashers while still doing something that feels fresh and bold.

The performances also play a huge role in why this movie works as well as it does. I genuinely loved the performances across the board, especially Rohan Campbell as Billy Chapman performance. He manages to be incredibly vulnerable while also being genuinely menacing. That balance is not easy to pull off, but it makes the character far more interesting than your typical slasher villain if you can even call him a villain. You understand him, you feel for him, and at the same time, you are unsettled by what he is capable of. The supporting cast also brings a lot of energy and personality, which helps ground the madness.

The Christmas themes are where the movie really shines. They play really nicely into the story and add an extra layer of almost campiness while also enhancing the horror element. Seeing all that festive cheer twisted into something dark and violent just works. It might actually be my favourite Christmas movie of the year. There’s one scene in particular that had the crowd cheering and I gladly joined in. The ending also caught me completely off guard. There is a twist I never expected, but it left me feeling hopeful that we might get a second film. If you like horror movies, or if you are just looking for something a little different this festive season, then this is the movie you absolutely have to go watch.
