What to watch this March.

March will see the release of a few major movies and TV shows. Here's a list of once you definitely shouldn't miss.

January and February had a few good movies, but I think the cinema will finally gain some steam in March. March can be seen as the month that leads us into the blockbuster season, which is why some of the bigger movies of the year will be released this month. It’s not just about the movies, but also some great TV shows that will debut this month. I searched far and wide so that I can tell you what to look forward to this March.

This list isn’t in chronological order, but rather based on what I think are the most important releases and what will create the most buzz online. I also think it makes sense to start with a film that I’m really looking forward to, Project Hail Mary.

Project Hail Mary
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce

This film stars Ryan Gosling, which should already get you excited. The film is based on a novel by Andy Weir. Gosling stars as a science teacher, Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly returns, he soon discovers he must solve the riddle behind a mysterious substance that’s causing the sun to die out. It seems like it’ll be the perfect science fiction movie to start off the year. It will be in cinemas on 20 March.

Hoppers
Starring: Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm

Pixar’s new movie actually has fan screenings this weekend, so you can catch it in cinemas before anyone else. I’ve already seen it, and let me just say it’ll make a lot of kids and families happy. It feels fresh and a little familiar. Piper Curda stars as Mabel, a young girl who uses new technology to uncover mysteries of the animal world that are beyond anything she could have ever imagined. It will officially be in theatres on 6 March.

Ready or Not: Here I Come
Starring: Samara Weaving, Kathryn Newton

This horror franchise finally expands, and I’m so excited to see what they will do next. Few horror films stand out like the 2019 film, so to finally get a sequel is very exciting. Samara Weaving returns as Grace, joined by Kathryn Newton as her sister, Grace. Grace discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game, and once again has to survive while taking care of her sister. It will be in cinemas on 20 March.

The Heart is a Muscle
Starring: Keenan Arrison, Melissa De Vries, Loren Loubser

I watched this at the Silwerskermfees last year, and I’m really happy that the broader public finally gets to watch it as well. It’s a beautiful story set against the backdrop of the Cape Flats. It not only tells the story of someone who tries to get away from his past, but also how he tries to better himself. The film is carried by amazing performances and feels very familiar. If you are ready to cry a little, then this Afrikaans movie is for you. In cinemas on 6 March.

One Piece
Season 2

One Piece is probably the biggest show returning this March. The Straw Hat Pirates go on new adventures this season as they come across new and old enemies. Netflix has a hit on their hands with this show, and the fact that it was shot in Cape Town makes it a lot more special. I was also invited to attend the Cape Town premiere, which will take place on 8 March. The show will drop on Netflix on 10 March.

Invincible
Season 4

Mark Grayson and the other heroes from the Invincible universe return on 18 March. This is one of the best adult animations and maybe the best superhero show currently on TV. I’m just glad it didn’t take Amazon years to bring us this new season. The trailer looked amazing, and I honestly can’t wait to watch it.

Daredevil: Born Again
Season 2

The first season reminded me why the Man Without Fear is one of my favourite Marvel characters. It was great to see all these characters get folded into the MCU, and I’m excited to see where we go next. The first season ended on a huge cliffhanger, so I can’t wait to see Daredevil face off against the Kingpin again. Daredevil: Born Again will be on Disney Plus on 25 March.

Ted
Season 2

I know Ted isn’t for everyone, and please don’t let your kids watch it. I’m a fan of Seth MacFarlane, and I think the Ted TV show is the best thing he’s done in years. It’s been two years since the first season, so it will be great to see what Ted and John are up to now that they’re a little older. The show will be out on Showmax on 18 March.
