I officially have four Comic Con Cape Town badges, and this year might have been one of the best experiences yet.
I don’t know if I said this before, but part of the reason why I started The Movie Guy is so that I could attend events like Comic Con. I wanted to be at the centre of all things pop culture, and I’m so blessed that I’ve been able to attend this specific convention for four years straight. What’s even better is that I do it as a member of the media.

This column is, however, about this year’s convention, because there’s so much that I want to say. First things first, I’m extremely exhausted. It feels like I ran a marathon. I’m tired, but at the same time I feel fulfilled, because I achieved everything I set out to do for this Comic Con.
This year I wanted to focus more on the people rather than the event itself. I wanted to make friends; I wanted to talk to people about their Comic Con experience and, most importantly, their love for movies. I know not everyone gets to go to the cinema every week, so I took the opportunity to get people excited about what they can catch in theatres soon.

I needed to make sure that people knew that, just like Comic Con, the cinemas offer something for everyone. I got to have so many great conversations with people, and usually I’m not someone who talks a lot. I was just comfortable because I got to share something I’m passionate about with people who share that passion.
On the first day of Comic Con, I made sure to catch as many panels as I possibly could because I love hearing people’s perspectives and I always want to learn more. I stumbled onto a great author, Michael Ferguson, and his four-day panels on writing gave me a spark to continue working on my writing.

Day 2, I focused on all the amazing guests. I can’t believe I got to see Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter franchise. Christopher Sabat and Jason Liebrecht also had some of the funniest panels; they are known for their anime voice roles. Finally, I attended a panel with John Romita Jr., who is hands down one of my favourite comic book artists. His Spider-Man designs are flawless.
On Day 3, I was focused on that movie quiz of mine. Apparently, it was harder than people expected. I had so much fun doing it, and I think I made a whole lot of new friends doing it. Day 4 was mostly the same, but I also took some time for myself and to just check out the incredible stalls. There are so many talented people in Cape Town. In a nutshell, that was my Comic Con.

That said, I still want to share with everyone the movies they can look forward to watching in cinemas this month. On 8 May, we have Mortal Kombat II, which looks like it will take the franchise to the next level. Also, on the same day we have The Sheep Detectives starring Hugh Jackman, and it looks like it might be a great family film.
On 15 May, we have an interesting horror called Obsession coming out. Finally, on 22 May, we return to the galaxy far, far away with The Mandalorian and Grogu. Hopefully, you don’t need to watch the whole series to understand the film.
