Coming this August

July had two of the biggest and three of my favourite movies of the year so far, so how will August match up to this?

July had two of the biggest and three of my favourite movies of the year so far, so how will August match up to this?

August looks really promising, there are a bunch of movies I’m looking forward to and then there are a few that I didn’t even know were coming out. In the end any month that has a dinosaur movie is strong competition. I bet you can tell that The End of Oak Street is the film I look forward to the most, but I’m also cautiously looking forward to Coyote vs. Acme, because I love the Looney Tunes.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie

The PAW Patrol pups find themselves on an island filled with dinosaurs and must stop a dangerous scheme before it causes disaster. Featuring the voices of Mckenna Grace, Terry Crews, Fortune Feimster and Jameela Jamil, this one is obviously aimed at a much younger audience than me, but I have to admit that adding dinosaurs to PAW Patrol does make it slightly more interesting. I’m probably not rushing to the cinema for this one, but families should have a good time.

The End of Oak Street

When a mysterious cosmic event separates an ordinary suburban neighbourhood from the rest of the world, one family has to figure out what happened and how to survive their bizarre new reality. Starring Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery, this is definitely more my kind of movie. I’m a sucker for a good sci-fi mystery, add in dinosaurs and my movie tickets are book. With It Follows director David Robert Mitchell behind it, I’m very curious to see exactly what kind of strange story he has cooked up.

Mutiny

Jason Statham stars as Cole Reed, a man who witnesses his billionaire boss being murdered and is subsequently framed for the crime, forcing him to uncover a much bigger conspiracy. With Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller and Adrian Lester also starring, Mutiny looks like exactly the kind of straightforward action movie I can get behind. It probably isn’t going to reinvent the genre, but sometimes you just need Jason Statham punching people and blowing things up, and I’m perfectly happy with that.

Insidious: Out of the Further

A young mother discovers she can enter the supernatural realm known as The Further, but soon discovers that she may also be able to bring things back with her. Starring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye, this is another horror movie that I’ll probably be sitting out because, as regular readers will know, horror really isn’t my thing. Fans of the Insidious franchise, however, should be excited to see Lin Shaye return as Elise Rainier.

Spa Weekend

Four friends head to a luxury spa for a relaxing weekend, only for things to quickly spiral into chaos when their troublesome friend arrives. Starring Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, Michelle Buteau and Anna Faris, Spa Weekend looks like it could be a fun, silly comedy, and that cast certainly has me interested. I’m not expecting the next great comedy, but if it can deliver a few good laughs, I’m in.

28 August

Coyote vs Acme

After years of ACME products spectacularly failing to catch the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote decides to take the company to court with the help of a human lawyer. Starring Will Forte, Lana Condor and John Cena, Coyote vs Acme is probably one of the August releases I’m most curious about. I grew up with Looney Tunes, so there’s a huge nostalgia factor here, and the idea of turning Wile E. Coyote’s never-ending battle with ACME into a courtroom comedy is ridiculous enough to work for me.

The Dog Stars

In a post-apocalyptic world, a pilot living in isolation receives a mysterious radio transmission that could offer hope for humanity and sets out to discover its source. Starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce, with Ridley Scott directing, this immediately grabs my attention. I’m a big fan of a good post-apocalyptic story, and with that cast and director attached, The Dog Stars is definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on.

August once again offers variety and who knows, PAW Patrol might dominate the box office, or The End of Oak Street might be the best dinosaur movie since the original Jurassic Park. All I know is, it might be an interesting movie at the cinema.
