Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially become the biggest opening weekend in South African box office history.

The latest Marvel blockbuster earned more than R44 million during its opening weekend, making it not only the biggest opening ever in South Africa but also the biggest opening for a Sony Pictures release in Southern Africa. More than 336,000 people watched the film across 82 cinema locations and more than 200 screens nationwide.
CineCentre CEO praised the film’s incredible performance and the collaboration behind the release.
“Congratulations to the entire Sony/Filmfinity team on an outstanding Spider-Man success. The audience response has been phenomenal, all the initiatives worked brilliantly, and it’s always a pleasure collaborating with your team. Together we’ve helped encourage existing audiences and bring new audiences into cinemas, creating momentum for continued growth in the theatrical experience.”
Ster-Kinekor echoed that excitement, with its General Manager for Content and Scheduling saying:
“Mzansi Spiddies showed up and showed off. What a time for cinema lovers.”
Ster-Kinekor’s Chief Marketing Officer added that following the South African premiere at Eastgate and sold out cinemas across the country, Spider-Man: Brand New Day “captured the imagination of our audience and delivered a truly blockbuster weekend.”
Filmfinity said the record-breaking opening is a reminder that audiences are still eager to experience movies on the big screen, with the film bringing moviegoers of all ages back to cinemas across the country.
The success wasn’t limited to South Africa. Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already crossed the US$1.052 billion mark, becoming the second-fastest film in history to reach the milestone.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now showing in cinemas across South Africa.
