The Movie Guy’s Comic Con

Comic Con Africa ended over two weeks ago, but I still find myself reliving every single moment because this year’s convention wasn’t like any other.

Getting to Comic Con Africa 2026 was a struggle. There was a moment when I genuinely thought I wouldn’t make it, but thankfully, I did. At the last minute, someone came through and made it possible for me to fly to Johannesburg and attend the event. I am eternally grateful for all the love and support I received and for everyone who made it possible for me to go.

I can say this was the best Comic Con ever, but I usually say that after every convention. I can, however, say that this one was the most memorable because I got to experience it from a whole different point of view. I think the fact that I was able to make it at the last minute made it even more special.

Last year, I got to interview Misha Collins, which was a dream come true. It made me feel like I was some sort of TV host, and all that excitement reminded me why I became a journalist. I wanted to share good stories with people while getting to talk to some remarkable people.

This year, I got to interview six remarkable people. I interviewed the fantastic Richard T. Jones, who is best known for his role as Wade Grey in The Rookie. I also interviewed Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden and Spencer Grammer, the three main voice actors in Rick and Morty. I then sat down with Christopher Judge, whom most people know as the voice of Kratos in the God of War video games.

I also got to chat with the fantastic DJ Elliot, or Elliot Hansen, who not only serves as a host of Comic Con Africa and Comic Con Cape Town but also presents and organises Star Wars conventions and is part of Comic Con New York.

Those interviews alone made the struggle to get to Comic Con worth it. Ten years ago, I never would have imagined that I would be shaking hands and chatting with people I admire.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around how I managed to talk to everyone so calmly. I was freaking out moments before the camera started recording, and I know I might have stumbled over some of my questions, but I somehow pulled it off. Everyone was so kind and accommodating. DJ Elliot and I connected over our shared love of Back to the Future, and honestly, that was the fastest I’ve ever made a new friend.

Richard shared a few inside scoops about what people can expect to see in Season 9 of The Rookie, while also taking some time to send a special shoutout to my dad. Christopher was incredibly accommodating and took time out of his lunch break to give me an interview. During our conversation, he also hinted at what people can expect from God of War: Laufey, coming out next year.

The Rick and Morty cast talked about their roles and the work they put into being voice actors. They even delivered a special message at the end of the video.

To some people, this might seem insignificant, but to me, all these interviews are highlights of my career.

The more I think about all of this, the more blessed I feel. I can’t believe that I’m now a guy who gets to rub shoulders with celebrities, even though I once saw myself as just a guy behind a computer screen who occasionally made videos. I couldn’t have done Comic Con without my partner, Christie Schulz, aka SmileySpidey.

I’m once again reminded that life might not go the way we plan, but we’re always pushed in the direction we need to go.

All the interviews are available on my YouTube channel.
