The Dead Kill

I don’t care what you think about zombies, but they always end up killing the really cool people and sometimes I like that.

Army of the Dead is no different. It’s a bunch of awesome zombies running around killing really stupid, but awesome people. This is probably also the easiest way to summarise the movie’s plot: human does something stupid, zombie apocalypse starts, they fight, humans lose, they try something stupid and zombies continue to kill.

While it is a really cool concept, the movie just doesn’t really deliver. The action sequences are thrilling and I love the gore, but there’s something missing. I guess it’s something most 2021 movies (so far) lack, character development.

Sure the movie is about a bunch of people pulling off a heist in a zombie-infested Las Vegas, but it could have been so much more than that. The film has a 148-minute runtime and it leaves you feeling empty, which in this case is a bad thing.

I do think the movie has a stellar cast. Each actor truly gave it their best and they truly embodied their characters. That said, I believe there could’ve been more growth for certain characters, giving the movie a few fun twists

The story is also a little predictable, you can easily figure out which characters won’t make it till the end. I might seem really critical of the movie, but I also really enjoyed it. I would’ve loved to see it in cinemas.

It’s the kind of popcorn movie that would look better on the big screen. The handful of jump scares, the explosions and the thousands of gunshots would’ve looked awesome at the movies. I really look forward to the spin-off show and movie of Army of the Dead.

After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever.

My Verdict

Army of the Dead definitely isn’t an Oscar contender, but it is a lot of fun. It lacks a few elements that would’ve made it an amazing movie, but it’s still enjoyable. Maybe it’s just the major movie fatigue talking, but I do think the movie is worth seeing. It’s now streaming on Netflix.

My Rating:  6 out of 10 – Could’ve been better
