A Spider’s Sting

She’s a total badass, but would you believe me if I told you she isn’t the only one?

Marvel Studios is back and we finally get to see Natasha Romanoff go on a solo mission, well sort of. Black Widow is the movie Marvel fans have been begging for and it’s finally here and honestly it’s been worth the wait.

The spy thriller gives Natasha the screen time we all knew she always deserved, plus it makes her character so much better. Gone are the days when we had to beg Hollywood for strong female characters not tied to a male character, because now we have them and they rule the silver screen.

The movie is special because it gives us a character that we love and it’s not weighed down by unnecessary politics. You can just sit back and enjoy it without it being complicated with social messages that would’ve ruined it.

There is finally a light at the end of the tunnel and we can again enjoy movies and Black Widow is the perfect film to break the drought. The movie might be centred on Natasha, but it also brings some new Marvel characters into the MCU.

We get to meet a bunch of new Black Widows and Russia’s version of Captain America, Red Guardian makes his debut – also Taskmaster is in there somewhere. The introduction of the new characters provides so much depth to the MCU and opens the door for more stories in the future.

Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova is probably the best part of the movie. Her character almost makes you forget that the film isn’t flawless. I also loved David Harbour as the Red Guardian, giving us a more comical take on a nation’s protector. Once again Scarlett Johansson fully embodies Natasha and delivers an emotional performance for the ages.

One of the things I loved most about the movie is the action sequences. They feel grounded, but just as explosive as any other film in the franchise. The movie feels a lot like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it does make one huge mistake, Taskmaster.

Marvel fans have been waiting so long to finally see Taskmaster’s debut, but unfortunately the studio failed to deliver. The character has one or two memorable scenes, but the film just doesn’t do him justice.

Apart from the Taskmaster fail and a few other missteps, Black Widow is an awesome addition to the MCU. Natasha finally gets to show off more of her skills and it just feels amazing to see a good movie again.

My Verdict

Black Widow might not be the best MCU flick, but it’s definitely one of the best films of 2021 so far. It’s funny, entertaining and action-packed. I can’t wait to re-watch it 2 or 6 times. I might be a little biased since Black Widow is one of my favourite superheroes, but all in all, I do think the film is worth the watch and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the characters.

My Rating: 8.4 out of 10 – Love it!
