A Diabolic Return

Blood, obscenity, gore, and some stories from the war; The Boys season 3 is exactly what you expected and maybe a little more.

The show picks up a year after the last season and a lot has changed, but the spirit of the show remains the same. It is superhero satire at its best and it is the best at what it does. Crazy action, comedy, a bunch of f-bombs, throw in a load of guts scattered all over and you have winner.

The show doesn’t slow down, even though the Boys are still struggling to slow down the Seven. Three seasons in and there’s still so much story left to tell, it kind of seems like the Boys might stick around for a long time. That’s what I hope for.

Anyway, back to season three. The Boys are separated after the season 2 finale. Hughie now has a government office job trying to keep supes inline, MM has retired, and Butcher and the rest are hunting supes in a more peaceful way (working under Hughie). It’s not long before the Boys reunite to do what they do best, f-ing kill some super bastards.

Three episodes in and I’m already angered by the superheros. I wish Butcher would just butcher them all. A few new characters are almost butchered right from the start. So if you came for murder, then you will get murder. If you came for satire then you will get satire. And if you want to see the show take jabs at other superhero franchises, then I suggest you tweet out #ReleaseTheBourkeCut.

Homelander really loses his sh*t this season. You get to see a darker more sadistic Homelander, something I didn’t think was possible. The show definitely doesn’t pull its punches and that’s what I love about it.

The Boys is about taking something popular and turning it into something vile, almost diabolical, if you will. After two season and a spinoff, and still they keep pushing the limits of what we think TV can be. Hopefully they keep doing that, because it’s clearly working.

The show knows what it is and that’s why it’s so successful. It thrives on the dark humour and the cinematic-like action sequences. The blown up bodies and heads might be a little too much for some, but it is part of what makes the show so badass and successful.

I might be biased since The Boys is one of my favourite shows ever, but I think it gets better with each season. Just when you think it can’t get better it goes in a direction that redefines everything. It takes risks and it nearly always pays off. It’s not a show for the faint-hearted.

I don’t even have to talk about the acting or the technical aspects of the show, because it’s on-par with greatness. The old cast is as impressive as ever and the newer cast members know what’s expected of them. Also, you shouldn’t miss a few amazing cameos.

It’s been a year of calm. Homelander’s subdued. Butcher works for the government, supervised by Hughie of all people. But both men itch to turn this peace and quiet into blood and bone. So when The Boys learn of a mysterious Anti-Supe weapon, it sends them crashing into the Seven, starting a war, and chasing the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.

My Verdict

As with the previous seasons, this one is a must much. It is currently the best thing on any streaming service. I can’t wait for the next episode; it’s one of the few new things to look forward to. So if you haven’t watched The Boys yet, then now is the perfect time to get into it. Just a reminder, this is an adult show. It’s filled with gory scenes and things that might give some of you nightmares. The kind of things I love, so if you’re also into that then I strongly suggest you start watching the series.

My Rating: 9.8 out of 10 – Almost Perfect
