A Very Sitcom Christmas

Last night I was trying to find a Christmas movie, but I was kind of tired so I turned to a sitcom instead.

I just wanted a little Christmas cheer, but I knew I wouldn’t stay awake for 90 minutes, so instead I watched How I Met You Mother. While watching it I started to think what are the best Holiday themed episodes from some of my favourite sitcoms.

Whether it’s heartfelt moments, office disasters, or completely unhinged behaviour, these episodes can become annual rewatches for a reason. Here are the best Christmas episodes from some of the most beloved sitcoms ever made, each one capturing a different side of the festive season.

How I Met Your Mother

Episode: False Positive (Season 6, Episode 12)

After a pregnancy scare, Ted, Marshall, and Robin are forced to confront where they are in life, while Barney hides from emotional growth by escaping to laser tag. The episode balances humour with the quiet panic that often creeps in during the holidays.

Why it stands out: It captures how Christmas can amplify big life questions while still feeling unmistakably HIMYM.

The Office (US)

Episode: Christmas Party (Season 2, Episode 10)

Michael derails Secret Santa by turning it into Yankee Swap, instantly creating resentment, jealousy, and pure chaos. The office party spirals exactly the way every badly planned work Christmas does.

Why it stands out: It’s peak cringe comedy and the episode that truly defined The Office’s holiday legacy.

Parks and Recreation

Episode: Citizen Knope (Season 4, Episode 10)

When Leslie is suspended, her friends secretly recreate the Parks Department in a borrowed office to lift her spirits during Christmas. It’s a beautiful reminder of how much this team believes in one another.

Why it stands out: It’s wholesome, emotional, and packed with the kind of warmth only Parks and Rec can deliver.

Friends

Episode: The One with the Holiday Armadillo (Season 7, Episode 10)

Ross dresses as the Holiday Armadillo to teach Ben about Hanukkah, while Chandler unexpectedly steals the spotlight as Santa. The episode blends festive chaos with classic Friends humour.

Why it stands out: The Holiday Armadillo is one of the most iconic Christmas sitcom creations of all time.

Modern Family

Episode: Express Christmas (Season 3, Episode 10)

The family attempts to celebrate Christmas early before everyone leaves town, turning the day into a perfectly timed disaster. Each household unravels in their own very familiar way.

Why it stands out: It perfectly captures the stress of trying to force a “perfect” Christmas.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Episode: A Very Sunny Christmas (Season 6, Episodes 13 & 14 – Special)

The gang dismantles every traditional Christmas value through violence, selfishness, and deeply uncomfortable revelations. It’s dark, chaotic, and completely on brand.

Why it stands out: It’s the ultimate anti-Christmas episode that somehow feels essential viewing every December.

Scrubs

Episode: My Own Personal Jesus (Season 1, Episode 11)

Dr. Cox struggles with faith after losing patients during the holidays, while JD reflects on belief, hope, and purpose. The humour takes a backseat to raw emotional honesty.

Why it stands out: It acknowledges that Christmas can be painful, not joyful, and handles it with real empathy.

The Big Bang Theory

Episode: The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis (Season 2, Episode 11)

Sheldon wrestles with the concept of gift-giving, leading to one of the show’s most emotional moments when Penny surprises him. It’s a rare glimpse into Sheldon’s softer side.

Why it stands out: It proves that character-driven moments make the best Christmas episodes.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Episode: Yippie Kayak (Season 3, Episode 10)

Jake and Charles get trapped in a Christmas Eve hostage situation during a department store stakeout. Jake’s Die Hard fantasy quickly turns into something far more serious.

Why it stands out: It blends festive fun with action and heart, all while staying true to the show’s tone.

New Girl

Episode: LAXmas (Season 4, Episode 11)

Jess goes to extreme lengths to stop Nick from leaving for New Orleans on Christmas Eve, dragging the loft into an emotional mess. Relationships are tested when feelings finally come to the surface.

Why it stands out: It captures the emotional chaos of holiday goodbyes and unresolved love.

Great Christmas episodes don’t just rely on decorations or carols. They work because they use the season to reveal something deeper about the characters we love. Whether it’s warmth, heartbreak, chaos, or pure nonsense, these episodes remind us why sitcom Christmas specials remain some of the most rewatchable TV ever made.

Perfect viewing for when you need something festive without committing to another full Christmas movie.
