I’m not a big fan of horror, but Abigail had my attention from the start. I think it might have just swayed me.
Abigail is one of those movies that pay homage to classic and modern horrors, while still keeping the story fresh. It is a remake of the Dracula Daughter’s movie, but something separate from the Universal Monster universe. And it is awesome.
I went into the cinema with no expectations, because I tried not to read up to much on the film. All I knew was that it’s a ballerina who turns into a vampire. I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. It was a horror movie that I could actually watch over and over again.
I applaud the directors’ choice way of telling the story. It starts off like an action thriller, but then quickly pivots to this campy horror movie. One thing I can say without spoiling the film, there is a lot of blood. So if you get sick from seeing blood and guts, then you should probably avoid looking directly into screen.
The horror scenes are fantastic. It’s as campy and gory as something from the 1980s. There are quite a few small jump scares, but nothing that will have you jumping out of your seat. It does get dark at times, but it’s not a psychological horror.
The acting is phenomenal. Melissa Barrera is the perfect scream queen. She really brings her A-game in this film. Alisha Weir is however the star of the show. She quickly switches from an innocent 12-year-old ballerina to a merciless vampire or simply a monster.
The rest of the cast are amazing as well, with a special shout-out to Angus Cloud in one of his last roles. He really does great as the comic relief in the movie. The story while not groundbreaking, is still an entertaining one. The cast really helps elevate this movie to be more than just another horror.
Abigail really is a fun horror movie. It serves you comedy, gory moments and moments you can’t help to tell your friends about. I would go as far as to say this might be one of the best horror movies from 2024. If you love horror or if you just want to be entertained, then go check out Abigail.
