Best Movie Theater Snacks

Going to the cinema is a magical experience, and how do you make any experience even more magical? You take a snack along.

Now I’m only talking snacks that you eat, not drinks. The snacks that you buy at the theater or ones that you have to sneak in (because everyone has tried to sneak something in). These snacks are also only ones you would eat at the cinema not on your couch at home.

I personally prefer something chewy and salty like biltong or droëwors (my fellow Namibians and South Africans will know). I decided to do a poll so I can be unbiased, but I probably somehow rigged the outcome. Anyway, here’s what the people chose.

5. Chips or Crisps – 10%

Apparently, some people prefer something crunchy during their movies. I love a fried potato, but chewing it can get loud during a movie. The benefit is, it doesn’t get stuck in your teeth like a popcorn kernel, but it’s a lot more distracting.

4. Soft or Hard Candy – 13%

I love myself some Jelly Tots when I’m watching a movie and it seems other people like it too. These candies can be anything from a chewy toffee or a lollipop you can suck on to something in-between. I prefer something soft, because chewing helps me focus.

3. Chocolate – 20%

Chocolate can heal a world of hurt. If a movie is bad, then chocolate can cover the foul taste it leaves in your mouth. It’s also a great dessert after the salty popcorn. Alternatively, you can mix your M&M’s or Smarties with the popcorn to make the ultimate snack. I never go to the theater without chocolate.

2. Biltong and Droëwors– 27%

My personal and apparently the personal favourite of many South Africans and Namibians, even if we have to sneak it in. This salty meaty snack is easily the best man-made thing ever. It gives you the protein and energy boost you need. If you haven’t tried it yet, then you’re missing out on something spectacular.

1. Popcorn – 40%

It’s no secret that popcorn is the number 1 movie theater snack. And no one can make it better than a cinema concession stand. The salty buttery flavour complemented with a coke or slushy is what makes going to the cinema special. I get nostalgic when I have the two together. It always reminds me of my first movie theater experience 20 years ago. While I might not be a big popcorn fan, there’s no denying how special it is while watching a big blockbuster film.
