So you’re heading to Comic Con Cape Town, but your budget is a little tight? Don’t worry, I’m here to help.

So you’re heading to Comic Con Cape Town, but your budget is a little tight? Don’t worry, I’m here to help.

Now assuming you already have your tickets and you don’t have to worry about transport or accommodation – there are plenty of ways to enjoy Cape Town with only a few Rand in you pocket. I’ve done Comic Con on a budget before, so follow these tips to make the best of the event.

Food

The food at Comic Con Cape Town is usually fairly affordable, so you don’t have to worry too much about it. I’d say R200 can get you pretty far, you might even get two meals with that. There are plenty of food-trucks and other food vendors that will hopefully cater to your dietary requirements. Drinks might be a little pricey, so please check in with food vendors to find the ideal drink. You can take in a water bottle with you, just make sure to check with security before taking it in.

Merch and Other Stuff

Nobody wants to leave Comic Con Cape Town empty handed. You need have prove that you were there, no worries – there are plenty of affordable vendors. Comic Con Cape Town has their official merch, but if your looking for some incredible anime inspired trinkets and merch, then check out The Engrave Slave’s stall. You can also check out what other vendors will be at Comic Con on Mythical Mecca, so you can plan ahead. During my first Comic Con, I had around R200 in my pocket, I walked away with a signed comic, some awesome earrings and a few other cool stuff. Just move between the stalls, find what you like and support local vendors.

Entertainment

The second best thing about any Comic Con, is the activations. Whether you want to immerse yourself in a video game or try something you’ve done before – there is a lot to keep you busy. And the great thing is, these activations are usually free – some vendors even offer prizes for their activities. Last year I came home with at least 4 packets of chips and a bunch of energy drinks (this might also solve your snacking problem).

KidsCon

Comic Con Cape Town is all about family, so obviously you’re wondering how to keep the kids busy. KidsCon is curated for kids of all ages. Kids can take part in numerous activations, find their favourite toys (according to the parents’ budget) and hang out with their favourite characters. I’m not a kid, but I’m a kid at heart and when ever I see Mario and Luigi, I just have to snap a picture with them.

Celebrities and Panels

All panels are free, which is the best part of Comic Con. You can sit in through all panels, interviews and quizzes for free. All you have to do is get to a seat in time – it’s usually packed. Unfortunately not everyone can afford photo ops or autographs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go ask your favourite celebrity a question. There are usually Q&A sessions, so make sure you don’t miss it. You can also go around and meet your favourite artists – they are super friendly.

Comic Con Cape Town can be done on a budget, just prioritise what’s more important. If you only have a R100 in the pocket, then don’t fret – you can make it last.
