This month is supposed to be the busiest month for cinemas everywhere because it’s summer blockbuster month in the Northern Hemisphere.
June had some really great movies. Some turned out better than I expected, while others just disappointed me. I never thought that a Minions movie would be my favourite movie of the month, but I guess no franchise can surprise me at this point. July has two of my most anticipated movies of the year, and I feel confident that neither will be a disappointment. Here’s what you can catch in theatres this month.
10 July

Evil Dead Burn
The Evil Dead franchise returns with Evil Dead Burn, the latest chapter in one of horror’s most iconic series. While the previous film, Evil Dead Rise, moved the Deadites into an apartment building, this new instalment takes the franchise in another brutal direction with a fresh cast. The trailer was terrifying, so this is definitely for the hardcore horror fan.

Moana (Live-Action)
I have my doubts about this one, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Disney decided to bring Moana to live action almost ten years after the original animated classic sailed into cinemas. I love the original movie, and I think the second movie wasn’t too bad. Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia takes on the role of Moana, while Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui. We all know the story by now, but I’m not sure how well it will translate into a real-world setting. Whether this remake captures the same magic remains to be seen, but it certainly will be one of July’s biggest family releases.

The Odyssey
My favourite filmmaker returns with his biggest film yet. Christopher Nolan’s next film is easily one of the biggest cinematic events of the year. Based on Homer’s legendary Greek epic, The Odyssey follows Odysseus as he attempts to make the long and dangerous journey home following the Trojan War, encountering mythical creatures, gods, and impossible challenges along the way. Filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, the film has already generated enormous hype, and if Nolan’s track record is anything to go by, this is going to demand the biggest screen you can find.

Motor City
Alan Ritchson stars in this revenge-driven action thriller set against the backdrop of 1970s Detroit. I watched the trailer, and I still have mixed feelings, but I trust Ritchson’s acting ability. The film follows a man who, after being wrongfully imprisoned, sets out to uncover the truth and settle the score with the people who destroyed his life. Ritchson leads the cast alongside Shailene Woodley and Ben Foster. Motor City looks like it could deliver the gritty action fans have been waiting for.

The Invite
Olivia Wilde steps behind the camera for this dark comedy centred around a dinner party that quickly spirals into complete chaos. I’ve heard only great things so far, and some film critics have called it one of the best movies of the year. It features Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Edward Norton, and Penelope Cruz. The film blends awkward humour, relationship drama, and uncomfortable social situations into something I look forward to watching. If you enjoy comedies where everything that can go wrong does, this should be on your watchlist.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day
This is it. My most anticipated movie of the month and probably of the year.
Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker finds himself completely alone after the world forgets who he is. Brand New Day finally gives us a street-level Spider-Man again as Peter protects New York while investigating a dangerous new threat and dealing with mysterious changes to his own powers. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film brings back Tom Holland alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. The best thing is that we get to see Jon Bernthal as The Punisher alongside Spider-Man. I genuinely can’t wait to see where this new chapter takes Marvel’s most popular hero.
What movies are you looking forward to this month?
