Looking forward to 2022

The movies are back! Thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home the theaters got a much-needed boost. And now 2022 seems to be the year we get to go back to some sort of normal.

Starting 18 February, there are a string of blockbusters coming out that will keep us busy for a while. So, sit back, relax and you should probably get up first to go buy some movie tickets. Let’s check out what some of the most anticipated movies of 2022 are (in no particular order).

Uncharted

I’m not usually into video game adaptations, but I’m quite excited about this one. It gives us a different look at Nathan Drake and the Uncharted world. Tom Holland stars as a young Drake, while Mark Wahlberg steps into the shoes of Sully. So far, the reviews aren’t that great, but I don’t always trust the critics. Hopefully they don’t ruin the source material and we get a fun action-adventure movie that might match the Indiana Jones franchise (that probably won’t happen).

Jurassic World Dominion

The series is maybe coming to an end with this one, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the franchise. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprise their roles, from the other Jurassic World movies. Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, BD Wong and Sam Neill reprise their roles as well. So, they might be looking to get the nostalgia bug to bite us or maybe they do fit into the story, only time will tell. I love dinosaurs and I love the series, so I’m excited to see what happens next.

Lightyear

To infinity, and beyond… A look at the life as the legendary astronaut, Buzz Lightyear. The Pixar movie is a spin-off of Toy Story, but can it really be called a spin-off? Chris Evans stars as the astronaut that inspired one of the best animated toy film series. Maybe we’ll even get to see who was the inspiration behind Woody. All I know is that Pixar movies never disappoint and this is one of the movies I’m personally really excited about.

Thor: Love and Thunder

The first MCU character to get a fourth film is the god of thunder. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) returns in what might be his best adventure yet, thanks to director Taika Waititi. I know a lot of people might not be as excited about Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Forster, but I am. It’s about time we got to see Thor’s world get shaken up (because he hasn’t been through enough, he’s no Wanda). Portman will this time take on the mantle of the Mighty Thor. Hopefully it’ll be good, but I’m hoping for great. Thor Ragnarok is one of my favourite MCU movies.

Nope

If there’s one more thing Jordan Peele does very well, then it’s horror movies. I’m not a horror movie junkie, but I can’t turn down a film with a good story. And Peele is a brilliant storyteller. Not much has been revealed about the movie’s plot, but we do know that Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun will star. Whatever it is, I know it will be good and hopefully we’ll get more details about the movie soon.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part 1)

Last year we got what I consider the best live action adaptation of Spider-Man and this year we’ll get a sequel to what is the best Spider-Man film ever. Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy and Peter B. Parker returns to once again take on the multiverse. This time they are joined by Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099) and Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman). Not much has been shared about the film’s full story, but I know it’s going to blow our socks off. And we know that we will definitely get a sequel.

Avatar 2

After numerous delays and buying out of studios, James Cameron finally gets to share the sequel, of the highest grossing film ever, with the world. We go back to Pandora to explore new regions and new characters and creatures will be introduced along the way. The principal cast from the first film returns to take on new threats. The film promises to be visually stunning and by now we know that Cameron can easily create strange new worlds on the screen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

This is I’m most excited about and I have high hopes that it will be the best MCU movie ever. Doctor Strange enlists the help of the Scarlett Witch to take an a multiversal threat. There are rumours that Proffessor X, Loki, Reed Richards and some other Marvel heroes might make an appearance. After the big surprise we got in Spider-Man: NWH, I really hope Marvel Studios can top themselves. Strange and Wanda are probably the most powerful characters in the MCU, so there might be some big trippy fights waiting for us. America Chavez (played by Xochitl Gomez) will also make her debut in the film.

The Flash

DC has a few movies up their sleeve this year and the most one is The Flash. Like Multiverse of Madness, Barry Allen will also explore the multiverse and even revisit some characters that came before the start of the DCEU. Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton are both slated to return as their respective ‘Batmen’. New characters that are part of the Flash’s lore will also debut in the movie, including Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle. We don’t know where this story will take us, but I’m just excited to be part of the journey.

As you can see there are bunch of awesome movies coming out this year, Unfortunately I can’t include all of them. This year the cinemas will explode again and I’m looking forward to getting my popcorn and sitting back. Below are some movies that didn’t make the main list.

Honourable mentions:

The Batman

Black Adam

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The Lost City

Top Gun Maverick

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Minions 2: The Rise of Gru
