Murder in the 90s

Whatever happened to really good neo-noir thrillers? You know, like Seven, that movie was just so good.

Well, Denzel Washington and Rami Malek tried to pull from the spirit of Seven with their new movie. The Little Things, sort of succeeds, but overall it left me with some mixed feelings and that might not be a good thing.

The one good thing I guess is the movie takes place in the 1990s, which gives you some sort of nostalgia, except for the fact that it’s about murders. The performances are also out of this world. Denzel always delivers, no matter how weak the story or his lines might be. Rami also once again impresses with his acting chops.

Jared Leto joins them as a member of the supporting cast and forget about his ‘Joker’ for a while and just appreciate him for the wonderful actor he is. He kind of steals the show, no wonder he got nominated for a Golden Globe.

The direction of the film is also amazing; unfortunately the screenplay failed the film as a whole. And unfortunately the movie just doesn’t live up to Seven or any of the other neo-noir films I’ve seen over the years. Thankfully all is not lost, the movie is still impressive and something that can keep you entertained throughout the rest of the pandemic.

Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon joins forces with Sgt. Jim Baxter to search for a serial killer who’s terrorizing Los Angeles. As they track the culprit, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.

My Verdict

The movie might fail its audience, but that’s only if you start comparing it to other films. On its own, it’s pretty good. The performances luckily save it, so all is not lost. I will definitely recommend it if you want to go check out a nice crime thriller.

My Rating: 6 out of 10 – Could’ve Been Better
