Hey there
The first three months of 2025 have flown by, and I’ve been keeping busy creating content, running giveaways, having a burnout and diving into some incredible (and not-so-incredible) entertainment. The first quarter of this year taught me to value my friends (you) and to value my mental health.
I’ll talk more on my mental health in an upcoming column. This newsletter is all about entertainment. I want to talk about what came and what’s to come. I want to be more than some guy on Instagram who talks about pop culture. This is me getting to being a journalist, an entertainment journalist.
Anyway, here’s a quick recap of what’s been happening, plus my recommendations for movies, TV shows, and games!
What I’ve Been Up To
- YouTube Channel Growth: I’ve been working on my YouTube channel for years now, and I’m aiming to get monetized later this year! I recently hit 4 500 subscribers 🎉 and my goal was to reach 3 000 before the end of the year. Thanks to everyone who’s watched and supported my videos. And a special thanks to my subscribers.
- Valentine’s Day Giveaway: The Valentine’s Day Giveaway was a hit! Keep an eye out for more giveaways in the coming months. Oh, and I can’t tell what I’m planning for my next giveaway, yet. Unless you’ve subscribed to my Patreon or Instagram.
- Fantasy Novella Project: I’ve been brainstorming a fantasy novella idea—more on that soon! I also have another short story planned, hopefully I can share that as part of my column series.
- Upcoming Event: April is my birthday month. 🎉🥳🎁 And we also have Comic Con Cape Town coming up from 1 to 4 May – more on that later this week.
- April Challenge: This April I want to challenge myself to share a reel/TikTok/YouTube Short every single day. It might be something important, it might be a review or it might just be something random. Here’s to hoping you check in. 🤞
5 Movies from January to March I’d Recommend
- Som van Twee – An Afrikaans film with a heart of gold. Now I know not all of you understand Afrikaans, but that’s what subtitles are for. This is a movie you have to watch!
- A Working Man – Jason Statham and David Ayer team up once again to bring you an awesome action thriller. It might not be their best movie, but it is entertaining. You get exactly what you’d expect.
- Mickey 17 – A gripping sci-fi, which I understand that not everyone will love. I think Bong Joon-Ho and Robert Pattinson gave us one of the most memorable movies of 2025. I’ll keep on recommending it.
- Better Man – The Robbie Williams biopic is definitely the best movie of its genre. I know that not everyone will love and appreciate it the way I do, but I think everyone should give it at least one watch. I also really love the music.
- Companion – I can’t get enough of Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher. This “romcom” quickly turns into something from your nightmares. Honestly, I loved it.
2 Movies I Recommend You Avoid
- Snow White – Despite high expectations from Disney, this live-action remake failed to capture the magic of the original, offering a lackluster experience. Rachel Zegler is an awesome singer and shoutout to Gal Gadot, her acting was on par with Plank from Ed, Edd and Eddie.
- The Electric State – I wasted 2 hours of my life and I’ll never get it back.
If you want more reviews that you probably won’t find on any of my social media accounts, then go check out my Letterboxd.
5 TV Shows I’d Recommend
- Severance: Season 2 (Apple TV+) – I only wanted to include new shows, but I can’t make a list without mentioning Severance. It is currently the best show on any platform.
- Paradise: (Disney+) – Leave it to Sterling K. Brown to always impress me. This show kept on surprising me. I just couldn’t stop watching it.
- Suits: LA (Showmax) – It might be living in the shadow of its predecessor, but I think you should give it some time and eventually it might be equally as good.
- The Studio (Apple TV+) – A satirical look at Hollywood’s inner workings, starring Seth Rogen as a beleaguered studio executive. It’s funny and it takes satire to the next level.
- Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+) – The return of Matt Murdock in a new series that promised intense action and complex storytelling and it delivered.
2 Video Games (Jan-Feb) I’d Recommend
- Rugby 2025 – It might have sucked on launch day, but the developers keep patching it and eventually it will become the greatest rugby video game of our generation.
- Assassins Creed Shadows – It is great entry into the franchise, even if it’s not the best. The setting, the story, the gameplay – chef’s kiss.
5 Movies I Look Forward to (April – June)
- The Amateur (11 April)– A spy thriller starring Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Bernthal? Sign me up. I watched the trailer and I love it.
- Sinners (18 April) – Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan always cook. And this is right in time for my birthday. I need a new favourite vampire film.
- Thunderbols* (2 May) – This is definitely my most anticipated Marvel movie of the year. The marketing is outstanding so far and cast is awesome. I hope I won’t be disappointed.
- Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (23 May) – Mission: Impossible is the most important action franchise to me, so obviously the last Ethan Hunt story is on my list.
- Karate Kid Legens (30 May) – Karate Kid has been one of my favourite franchises since I can remember and Cobra Kai just added fuel to that fire. And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to watch a Jackie Chan movie again.
What’s Next?
- More Giveaways: Stay tuned for upcoming contests and opportunities to win exciting prizes, especially this April. I’m also planning a winter giveaway for those who want to get cozy at home.
- Content Creation: I’m planning a deep dive into my fantasy novella idea—more details to come! I also want change up the way I shoot and edit my videos.
- Community Engagement: Your feedback and support mean the world to me. Sharing my content helps a ton! Please take this survey to help me improve my content.
- XTRA Support: People have been asking me how they can support me, well I recently joined Patreon and Instagram Subscriptions. The financial support will not only help me grow my channel, but also help me upgrade my equipment and hopefully devout more time to making The Movie Guy your go-to page for all things pop culture.
Thanks for being part of this journey. Let me know what movies, shows, or games you’ve loved so far this year!
Catch you in the next update!
