Review – Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse the best superhero movie ever? Let’s talk about it.

Across the Spider-Verse is definitely a huge undertaking. It took everything that made the first Spider-Verse movie great and cranked it up to 11. The visual aesthetic is near perfect, the voice acting is spectacular, the storytelling is brilliant and the characters are amazing.

It’s hard to find something bad to say about this movie, because it really does deliver. There are a few plot holes that some critics pointed out, but none of it really affects the movie or franchise as a whole, and most aren’t even noticeable.

Now brace yourself for a few minor spoilers… The first Spider-Verse movie hinted at the live-action Spider-Man universes, while this one actually gives us a glimpse of it. We get to see Uncle Ben die in the Raimi and Webb Spider-Man franchises.

Donald Glover cameos as a live-action version of the Prowler, which is a role he reprises from Spider-Man: Homecoming. We don’t actually get to see the MCU Spider-Man, but Donald’s cameo is more than enough.

Can we talk about the animation now? Into the Spider-Verse was known for its unique animation style. It pretty much reinvented how we can watch animation. This movie builds on that. Every universe we visit has a unique animated style, there’s even a Lego universe.

My favourite animated style was from Spider-Punk’s universe, maybe I’m bias because he’s kind of like my new favourite Spider-Person? Anyway, the different universes really shine through because of the difference in animated style, but everything is still influenced by the comics.

I don’t want to say much about the story itself, as I want people to go and enjoy it for themselves. I will say this, Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 is a force to be reckon with. His motivations might seem a little off, but I get where he’s coming from.

Everything ties together perfectly and every new Spider-Man you see on screen is amazing. It does get a little weird at times, but in a good way. All-in-all, this might end up being my favourite Spider-Man movie ever. You know what; this might end up being the best superhero movie ever.

All that said, this movie is clearly a part one of two. So it does end on a cliff-hanger, which reminds me of the Avengers: Infinity War ending. I think how they ended it was great, not like how Fast X ended. And besides, Beyond the Spider-Verse will be in theatres March next year.

So forget about  this so called superhero fatigue, we just needed great stories.
