Namibian filmmakers have created some award winning feature and short films over the last decade. Everything from Katutura to the White Line to Baxu and the Giants – we have so many great films that you just can’t miss. It’s not just about the filmmakers but also the brilliant actors and the awesome crews.
Since we are celebrating 33 years of Namibian independence this month, I just felt it right to talk about some home-grown art. These movies need a little more exposure, so more people can appreciate our amazing stories. So subscribe, like and let’s talk local movies.
Katutura

One of the best movies to come from local soil was helmed by Florian Schott and he co-wrote it with Obed Emvula. Emvula also co-stars with Chops Tshoopara, Odile Gertze, andGift Uzera. The movie follows various characters as they try to live day-to-day in the township of Katutura. It has been screened at various festivals and raked in a bunch of awards.
The White Line

This movie is about a forbidden romance during the Apartheid era. It was written and directed by Desiree Kahikopo-Meiffret. And stars Girley Jazama, Jan-Baren Scheepers, Sunet van Wyk and Hazel Hinda. It is a beautiful story set during one of the hardest times in Namibian history. The film received critical acclaim and won the Kilimandjaro Award for Best Film at the Festival Africlap.
Hairareb

Starring our featured star of the month, Claudine de Groot, this drama has had a huge impact on Namibian films. It is loosely based on a book with the same name by August C. Bikeur. It is about a relationship falling apart and is seen through the eyes of a boy who found his father’s diary. It was directed by Oshoveli Shipoh and stars well-known Namibian actors, David Ndjavera and Hazel Hinda. It is critically acclaimed and has received several award nominations.
Next month we will talk more about some of the best locally produced movies.
