Beautiful, heart-warming, funny and simply awesome – that’s how I’ll describe The Wild Robot.

I never knew I would care this much for this movie, because I honestly didn’t even plan on watching it. For the first time ever I walked into the theatre having no idea what the movie would be about, I didn’t even speculate what the story might be. All I knew was it stars Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal.

It’s funny how a film you had zero expectations for can instantly turn into one of the best things you’ve watched all years. Yes, this movie definitely made it’s way into my top 10 list and you will find out why soon. So here are my thoughts.

Let’s look at the technical stuff first. This movie looks spectacular. It combines different animation styles that takes away the realism for a more fantastical or science fiction element. The characters and the world they live in is breathtaking.

Talking about the characters, the voice acting is brilliant. Lupito Nyong’o really soothed my heart with her excellent take on Roz. She perfectly balances the voice of a robot with the caring tone of a mother. The rest of the cast are exceptional as well, especially Pedro Pascal, Ving Rhames, Kit Conner, Matt Berry and Mark Hamill.

The movie feels reminiscent of some of the best and some of my favourite animated movies of all time like: Big Hero Six, The Iron Giant, Zootopia and The Lion King. This movie has a big heart and reminds us that caring isn’t a weakness but a super power.

The story pulled on my heartstrings, because it’s so relevant. Found family can easily become the ones we rely on the most. I don’t want to spoil the film for anyone, but I know this story will resonate with so many. It’s a film about parenthood, finding a home and being relentless in your kindness.

The Wild Robot reminded me that not everything is black and white, but that colour can change your world and the worlds of those around you. I haven’t felt this much sadness, hope, happiness and strength in a film recently, but this one gave me everything I needed.

And don’t worry, the kids will love this just as much as us grownups. The humour is clean and funny, the characters are cute and cuddly and movie itself has a special message for everyone. The only critique I can give is that it felt too long for some people, but I can watch it all day.
