What to Watch This June

June is packed with some awesome movies and right now it seems like I will be spending most of my time at the cinema.

June is packed with some awesome movies and right now it seems like I will be spending most of my time at the cinema.

May had some great releases; it was a good start to the blockbuster season, but June might actually break a few records. This month already started strong with Backrooms, a must-watch horror movie. Then we jump straight into the Digital Circus and Eternia. Here are all the movies you can watch in cinemas this month.

4 June

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act

This animated series easily pulled in millions of fans when it released on YouTube, and now we get to see it all wrap up on the big screen. It is set inside a bizarre digital world where trapped humans continue to unravel as they perform in a corrupted circus controlled by a mysterious AI ringmaster, pushing them closer to psychological collapse.

Masters of the Universe

I think this one is for everyone who just can’t get enough nostalgia. He-Man and Skeletor played an integral part of many of our childhoods, and now we get to return to Eternia once more. In the film, Prince Adam is stuck on Earth and soon discovers his destiny as He-Man. On his journey, he must unite the warriors of Eternia to reclaim Castle Grayskull from Skeletor and his forces.

Scary Movie 6

The Wayans brothers return to their long-running parody franchise. This time, they will satirise modern horror films and pop culture through a series of outrageous, interconnected spoof scenarios. The posters and trailers for this movie have shown what we can expect, so obviously I have my seat booked. And if this movie is successful, then we might end up getting White Chicks 2.

Power Ballad

I’m always game for a good musical, and Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas look like the duo we never knew we needed. The trailer caught my attention, and now I really want to go watch this film. In the movie, an unlikely creative partnership forms between a washed-up musician and a rising pop star as they navigate fame, ego, and reinvention through music.

Sarafina (Re-release)

I grew up with Sarafina, and it’s a movie I revisited over and over again as an adult. It’s not just an important historical film, but also has themes that I think are still relevant today. I never got to watch it in cinemas, so I’m really excited to see one of South Africa’s best films before the 50-year commemoration of the Soweto Uprising.

10 June

Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg is one of the best filmmakers of all time, and definitely one of my biggest inspirations. To see him once again make an alien movie is awesome. This is a mystery-driven sci-fi thriller centred on a world-altering revelation that forces humanity to confront an unknown extraterrestrial presence.

19 June

Toy Story 5

Toy Story is one of the most influential stories of all time, and the fifth chapter in this franchise might just once again remind us how amazing it is. In this film, Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the toys face a new chapter in a changing world where play is evolving, forcing them to rethink their purpose and place.

The Death of Robin Hood

This movie might be the underdog of this month. There isn’t much buzz around it, but I’m definitely excited to see what this Robin Hood offers that the others didn’t. This movie promises to be a darker reimagining of the legendary outlaw, exploring the decline, myth, or possible downfall of Robin Hood rather than his heroic rise.

Minions and Monsters

Okay, I’m going to be honest, this is the one movie I don’t really care much for, but I’m probably going to end up watching it anyway. The Minions are everywhere I look anyway. In Minions and Monsters, the Minions attempt to create their own monster movie in Old Hollywood, leading to chaotic encounters as they search for creatures to star in their film.

Supergirl

If this movie is just half as good as Superman, then I’ll be happy. I love Kara as a character, and it’s about time she got her own film. This movie might not be what fans expect, but I think it’s great to take characters on new journeys. Kara Zor-El arrives on Earth after a traumatic Kryptonian past and embarks on a brutal journey of revenge and self-discovery that challenges her heroic identity.

Jackass: Best and Last

The Jackass crew return for one final outing, blending new outrageous stunts with legacy-style chaos in what is positioned as their closing chapter. Will they go out broken, or will they still stand tall after this movie?

What June movies are you looking forward to? I’m excited for all of these except one and I think you can guess which one. Book you movie tickets at cinecentre.co.za!
