Why It’s Okay If They Don’t Support You on Your Journey

…Sometimes you just have to do live according to your purpose and a lot of times people won’t understand your journey.

…Sometimes you just have to live according to your purpose and a lot of times people won’t understand your journey.

It’s been a while since I wrote something, but this is something that’s been on my mind or a while now. It’s actually been bothering me, because I haven’t been getting the support I’ve been hoping for. I feel like I poured so many hours into doing something I love, but it always goes unseen.

It would’ve been a different story if it was something that didn’t require people to look at it, but unfortunately I need all the eyes and ears I can get. I need the views, the likes and the comments to continue working. I need people to interact with the content otherwise it all falls flat.

And that’s why I started thinking that maybe I’ve been things wrong and, yes – there’s a lot I can improve on but that wasn’t the problem. The content reached the audience I wanted to reach, but it didn’t speak to the people closest to me. It was important to get them to support my work, but most of them didn’t.

I’ve had conversations with friends and family and a lot of times the conversations lead to a movie or TV show (because that’s how I roll) and then they would end up asking me if I’ve seen it… And then I’m the bad guy for rolling my eyes, because I literally sent them a link to me talking about it on YouTube or on my blog or whatever. Usually the conversations just end there.

I try to reach my family and friends and I obviously know that most of them won’t be able to view all my content, which is okay. If they were in my shoes, then I probably wouldn’t have been able to check out all their stuff either. But just 30-60 seconds a week can make all the difference in my line of work.

There are strangers who spent hours each week going through my stuff. My biggest support comes from people I’ve never met, and some of them aren’t even in the same country as me. It’s heartwarming when some from India or Ireland or USA say they love my content, but it’s even more special when some from Namibia and South Africa says they can’t get enough of my work.

And all of this has been weighing on me, why don’t I get the support from my family and friends. Why can’t they take 1 minute to watch a video or scan through a column or like a post? Well, I don’t know. What I do know now is that I don’t have to beg for support from people who want to support me.

It’s okay if they don’t want to support me and I understand if they can’t support me. I’ve built a brand out of nothing less than a dream. I might not yet be where I hoped I’d be 2-years ago, but doing this work makes me happy. Being The Movie Guy gives me purpose and I get to share some really awesome stuff with some really cool people from all over the world.

I tried doing other stuff. I tried  going in a direction that family and friends told me to, but somehow that always falls through. So here I am, finally accepting that this is something I love and gives me another reason to wake up every morning. I might not get the support I want, but that’s okay. It’s okay if they don’t understand what I’m doing.
