I feel like a kid again! My favourite childhood TV show is back and it sent my emotions into overdrive.
X-Men ‘97 is nostalgic, but at the same time it’s something new and exciting. Like I said, it made me feel like a kid again. When the theme song hit, I had literal chills. I felt like 4-year-old Barry, sitting on a mat in front of the TV and eating a bowl of my favourite cereal again. (I think that’s what I’ll be doing for the next few episodes)
The show picks up where the original ended, with the death of Charles Xavier. The pilot almost feels like the originals pilot, with the team having to save a young mutant from sentinel weapons. Cyclops have his doubts about stepping into Professor X’s shoes, until Magneto steps in to make the X-Men his own.
I have to say I love Magneto’s heroic turn and that brings a littler more intrigue to the revival series.
I don’t want to share spoilers, but the show does quickly change the destiny of a couple of characters. It once again tackles really deep themes, just like the X-Men can do. Episode 2 really got me all up in my emotions. And the first episode was great for new and returning fans.
The animation is also amazing. It’s a little different from the original, but that was to be expected. They took what worked in the 90s and upgraded it, but it still kept that 90s hand-drawn feel. The characters and settings really feel like they’ve been pulled straight from the original series.
The voice acting is brilliant, most of the original cast returned and that adds an extra layer of nostalgia. It’s really awesome to hear the voices of my childhood and to once again feel immersed into the X-Men animated world.
The show is phenomenal and I think most people will feel that way. It combines everything we loved about the original, with what we love from recent Marvel shows. It’s not perfect, but it’s the perfect continuation of a beloved TV series.
Go check out X-Men ‘97 on Disney+, trust me they actually listened to fans and gave us what we want, plus a little more.
