Zombies, Giant Monsters and Teen Drama

The Resident Evil franchise has been around almost as long as I’ve existed, but Hollywood just doesn’t seem to know how to make a live action adaptation.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about the games, but I played some before. I know about the movies mostly because I was forced to watch them and apparently those suck too. I guess there’s just no way to satisfy fans when adapting this franchise.

The show really isn’t that bad, it’s just mediocre like most new Netflix shows. There’s so much building up to what you think the finale might be and then it ends on a cliffhanger that is totally unnecessary. I guess they hope fan would’ve called for a second season.

I know the Wesker character drew a lot of controversy, and I understand why but Lance Reddick’s performance is literally the best part of the show. The dude really knocks it out of the park. He’s the reason I set through all the cringey parts (and there were many).

The teen drama plot has also run its course. We get it teenagers are moody and they end up making stupid choices, but that doesn’t have to be part of the TV show. We want zombies and giant monsters. Lots and lots of zombies and giant monsters!

The Zeroes are awesome, but I wish they had more screentime. I get it – this is an origin story of sorts, but they could’ve at least put a few more zombie scenes in the post-apocalyptic timeline. Other than that, I think the show is decent enough to get a second season.

It might not be the Resident Evil adaptation everyone was hoping for, but it’s still a good CW drama. I mean Netflix teen drama. The zombies are a cool and the giant spider and crocodile were definitely great casting choices, and that’s about it.

The rest of the VFX isn’t too bad, especially that eye thing – you know what I’m talking about. And the fact that the show was shot in Cape Town also gives me the right to brag now. It was great to some local South African actors in the show.

If we do get a sophomore season, then I hope they adapt more of the videogame’s elements and more zombies eating people. Take a page from Game of Thrones, not all characters have to stick around till the end. Just make the story and action compelling and give us heroes we can root for and not ones you shove down our throats.

Fourteen years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by infected creatures while being haunted by her past, her father, and what happened to her sister, Billie.

My Verdict

The show might not feel like Resident Evil but just give it a chance, it might grow on you. There are better post-apocalyptic shows, but this one is still fun. Just enjoy it for what it is, a teen drama that happens to have zombies and teenagers with a badass dad. It might not be worth rewatching, but I think giving a chance might be worth it to some.
